Operations Centre Overview
Any room, which is specifically designed to be a centre for monitoring and managing resources - from networks and IT systems to industrial processes.
Operations Centre - Types
Network Operations Centre (NOC) - A Centre designed to monitor the continuity and performance of either a single network (as is the case with network carriers) or multiple networks (as is the case with Managed Service Providers/Outsourcers).
System Operations Centre/ Ops Bridge - These extend the functionality of the NOC to cover monitoring and management of critical IT systems as well as the network. These could be used internally by companies or by Managed Service Providers/Outsourcers to control multiple clients.
Bespoke Control Rooms - There are many industry sectors that utilise technology to centralise the moitoring and managment of their operation (e.g. Police Control Centres)
Operations Centre - Functions and Features
Layout - The layout is designed based on all relevant parameters - optimum space usage, workflows, visual line of sight, acousitics, etc.
Power - The Room is protected against power loss, (especially if it is a mission critical centre) by a centralised UPS and optionally a Generator. This coverage should include telephony and IT
Climate - Comfort Cooliing A/C provides a suitable climate for personnel to operate in a optimum environment
Power and Data Cabling - All should be structured and routed to each desk with cable management as part of the furniture design
Fire Detection - The room has fire detection equipment linked to the house alarm

Furniture - Designed and selected based on the workflow of the centre with elements such as the desk surface profile, sound levels, documentation required at hand, grouping of personnel all taken into account
IT housing - IT relevant to the Centre should be housed in a suitable environment. It is wise to reduce the IT at the desktop to a minimum (eg.monitor, mouse and keyboard). This can be achieved through use of thin-client technologies or through 'back-racking', which iimproves security and optimises maintenance strategies for the Call Centre
Display Technologies - Use of plasma screens, video walls etc. to display critical operational information
