| | Uninterruptible Power Supplies are an intrinsic
part of the electrical supply system for IT equipment. UPS's provide
a short term source of power in the event of a power cut. The level
of protection is dependant on the amount of battery autonomy
installed and typically allows for sufficient time for a generator
to start or for systems to be shutdown. The UPS, if conditioned,
also provides a high degree of filtering on the supply removing
electrical noise, surges, sags and transients.
Data Centre/Computer Room Units On-line, double conversion type units
are always recommended for Data Centre use, as they provide the best
protection. Units can also be 'parallelled' to increase capacity or
to add resilience and redundancy. In this configuration all units
share the load equally. The amount of battery autonomy required
depends on each individual requirement and should be calculated
based on each company's needs. If a generator is part of the
solution, then the batteries only need to keep the power alive until
the generator 'kicks in'.
